Adah
A lesson of Fidelity
"And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: ‘If you give the
Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door
of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the
Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt
offering.’ Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites,
and the Lord gave them into his hands.... When Jephthah
returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet
him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines!
She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor
daughter. When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, ‘Oh!
My daughter! You have made me miserable and wretched,
because I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.’
‘My father,’ she replied, ‘you have given your word to the Lord.
Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged
you of your enemies, the Ammonites. But grant me this one
request,’ she said. ‘Give me two months to roam the hills and
weep with my friends, because I will never marry.’ ‘You may
go,’ he said. And he let her go for two months. She and the
girls went into the hills and wept because she would never
marry. After the two months, she returned to her father and
he did to her as he had vowed..."

Ruth
A lesson of Constancy
"Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the
harvesters, ‘The Lord be with you~’ ‘The Lord bless you!’ they
called back. Boaz asked the foreman of his harvesters, ‘Whose
young woman is that?’ The foreman replied, ‘She is the
Moabitess who came back from Moab with Naomi. She said,
"Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the
harvesters." She went Into the field and has worked steadily
from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.’
So Boaz said to Ruth, ‘My dau~hter, listen to me. Don’t go and
glean in another field and don t go away from here. Stay here
with my servant girls. Watch the field where the men are
harvesting, and follow along after the girls. I have told the men
not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a
drink from the water jars the men have filled.’ At this, she
bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, ‘Why
have I found such favor In your eyes that you notice me - a
foreigner?’ Boaz replied, ‘I’ve been told all about what you
have done for your mother-In-law since the death of your
husband - how you left your father and mother and your
homeland and came to live with a people you did not know
before. May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May
you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under
whose wings you have come to take refuge.’"

Esther
A lesson of Loyalty
"... the king again asked, ‘Queen Esther, what is your petition?
It will be given you. What is your request? Even up to half the
kingdom, it will be granted.’ Then Queen Esther answered, ‘If
I have found favor with you, 0 king, and if it pleases your
majesty, grant me my life - this is my petition. And spare my
people - this is my request. For I and my people have been
sold for destruction and slaughter and annihilation. . . .‘"

Martha
A lesson of Faith
"When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to
meet him, but Mary stayed at home. ‘Lord,’ Martha said to
Jesus, ‘if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.’
Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ Martha answered,
‘I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’
Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who
believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives
and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ ‘Yes,
Lord,’ she told him, ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son
of God, who was to come into the world.’"

Electa
A lesson of Love
"And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but
one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one
another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his
commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command
is that you walk in love."
